Living in denial

I shake my head

I wipe my forehead clean

My eyes that fog

Become unblocked

The longer I wait to gleam.

I polish up my skin and clothes

Tie the laces, straighten bows

Iron press the hair.

I say hello to passers by

Chortle and chinwag

The friends.

And to the lover, the mask then cracks

As I stumble to my knees

The throwing arms

Engulf their calves

As I beg and plead.
